L’Île à Gaston
L’Île à Gaston, or Gaston’s Island, used to be a real island, isolated from the earth by an arm of the Loire and covered with meadows. The site is a protected area since 1994. It offers a mosaic of natural surroundings (dry meadow, humid meadow, alluvial forest, sandbanks of the Loire…) and shades an important diversity of bird species, mammals, insects and plants. The beaver builds his dams here.
Two hiking tracks marked out with beacons, from 2 and 3 kms, allow discovering Gaston’s Island, near Mantelot’s lock. Information panels about fauna and flora. Free visit.
